Tom Bennett and his family had lived for 14 years in a modest house on Townsend. But after six kids, Tom and Breda needed more space. The house next door went up for sale, so they decided they would bid on the property. Tom knew the lot was large (90’ x 200’), and as a building professional (Bencar Building Corp.), he could easily envision how a new house could accommodate his active family. They had the highest bid, so contracts were signed and plans to raze the old house were set in motion.
Not sure of what architectural style would best fit into the neighborhood, Tom consulted with local architect John Woodruff who has designed several Pelham renovation projects. It was the Tudor Revival that caught their attention; after all, there are quite a few Tudors built around Pelham in the 1920s and 1930s.
Among the details that define a Tudor are its massive stone chimney at the front of the house and its steeply-pitched roofs. Then there is the decorative half timbering on the front between which are set tall, narrow casement windows with multi-pane glazing. During the original Tudor period (1485-1603), the houses had a rustic look and often evolved through a series of additions. For this 21st century Tudor, John specified using a synthetic stucco along with fiberglass shingles to mimic the older look, but ensure low maintenance. Also, the half timbers are cut from a composite called Azek.
Inside, the entry hall rises to the second floor, with a similar high ceiling in the living room. While older Tudors seem somewhat dark, this version abounds in light due to the many windows and high ceilings. In all, there are five bedrooms with a den that could serve as a sixth.
The massive stonework on the front of the house actually consists of four different stone types selected from the supplier in Danbury, CT.
Two of the six Bennett children are actually attending college now, but since August, when the family moved in, they have also quickly adjusted to their new spacious surroundings. Furnishing and decorating will continue for the next few months.
Tom’s Bencar Building Corporation has operated in Pelham since 1994.
